Brief Introduction of Nankai Law School

The law school of Nankai University was established in June 2004, including the law department, the research institute of law, the research institute of international law, etc. Up until now, there are 58 faculties in the school ,among them 46 are teachers, including 12 professors, 20 associate professors, 11 instructors, and 3 assistants. 15 of the teachers have acquired a doctor’s degree, and 18 teachers are studying for it. Presently, besides JM, there are 8 specialties that have the right to give a Master Degree. They are the theory of law, the history of law, Constitution and administrative law, civil and commercial law, economic law, procedural law, international law and environmental and resources protection law. 1484 planed students are now studying in the institute, including 868 postgraduates, 550 undergraduates. Apart from these students, there are 107 students studying the courses for postgraduates, and 1475 students studying at the adult education institute.

 In Law school there are 8 staff rooms which are the theory and history of law, Constitution and administrative law, civil and commercial law, economic law, procedural law, international law, criminal law and environmental and resources protection law. Besides, there are 2 research institutions that are the Research Institute of Law, the Research Institute of International Law. It also has established the Party committee office, administrative office, teaching and academic research office, the League committee and Students union office, educational center of Jurisprudence major and training center. It is supported by a completed system that combines library and information center, material evidence lab, stimulating court and computer center, etc.

 A Century Course

Nankai University was established in 1919. Since then, it had been laying emphasis on the building of law major in order to cultivate the talents for managing state affairs. At that time, the trend was to emphasize the combination of law, politics and economics. So in the history of Nankai University, the law major was belonged to political economy institute and law and economy institute successively. At the beginning of establishing Nankai University, it had invited many famous scholars to found and teach the subject of law. During the 20, 30 and

40s’of 20^th century, lots of famous scholars and specialists of law taught in Nankai University, like Mei Ruao, Xu Mo, Xiao Gongquan, Wang Ganyu, Zhang Jinjian, etc. Prof Wang Ganyu was teaching in Nankai Univ. all along still he passed away in 1997. In the 80s’ of 20^th century, he still instructed the graduates of international economy law. In 1980, the law department was founded, and the first department head was Prof Pan Tonglong. The Research Institute of International Economy Law was founded in 1995, the first department head was Prof Gao Erseng, whose research in the field(International Tariff Law)was very early in China. In 1985, Chinese famous jurisconsult Prof Li Guangcan was cannibalized here. Under his leadership the Research Institute of Law was set up. In the early times, it invited many well-known scholars to instruct and do research, and the famous jurisconsult Prof Lv Shilun was the first department head.

 System Reform

With the management system reforming in Nankai Uni., it established the school of Law and Politics in 1994， including the subjects of law, politics, sociology, etc, which was substantiated in 1998. In order to impulse the development, Nankai Univ. decided to found the School of Law.

 With the efforts of several generations of faculties and the development these years, the law department of Nankai Uni. has had a lot of excellent teachers, many of whom are young and middle-aged, are very active in all kinds of academic organizations undertaking the duties in them; some retired professors are still exerting influence. All of these have formed a comparatively perfect research foundation which possesses certain scale and potential for the

development of Nankai Law School. Welcome all the excellent scholars and doctor graduates to join us!

Academic and teaching

 The school of law is increasing the input into education, reinforcing the instruction of subjects, reforming and innovating the contents of the subjects. During the procedure it lays special emphasis on the training of students’ all-round quality and the ability to create. It has establishes a completed system that combines simulating court, academic research and social practice of judicature together. All of these have further perfected the course system and teaching context that can reflect the highest level in the development of modern science of law, and reflect the new talent training purpose and training pattern. It has also set up the educational ideology of “students as the main part and teachers as the leading factor”, and applied modern educational methods and patterns to reform and bring forth the content of the subject, thus the quality has been improved greatly.

 In order to adapt to the development of society and meet the need of joining in WTO, Nankai Uni. established a specialized subject for undergraduates, which is authorized by Ministry of Education. It combines the law, management, and economics together, in order to cultivate talents who can hold the knowledge of the three majors. After graduation, students can have double-degrees chosen from the law, management, and economics. 

 Practice

For the sake of enhancing the building the base for practice, the school of law has set up relations with all levels of law departments of government, law offices and arbitrage organizations for providing students the chances to strengthen practical ability. We also have invited many famous jurists who have lots of experience from law and government departments as our part-time professors, which can enhance the commutations with students and enlarge their horizon.

Meanwhile, students’ logic and practical abilities have been improved a lot through holding

stimulating court and debating competitions, which can work in teaching and create more

opportunities to practise for students. Every vacation, the school of law would offer students all kinds of chances to put their knowledge into practice.

International academic communication

The school of law attaches much attention to academic communication, and has established

academic communication relations with many universities in America, England, Japan, Germany and Australia. Our international academic communication is being enhanced by ways of inviting guest professors, exchanging scholars, taking refresher courses, and holding international academic meetings. Hong Kong HuGuanLilLuo lawyer office supported Prof

 Gao Erseng 1 million RMB to carry on the research of Nankai International Economy Law (1994); We also have held “International Meeting of Open Information and Administrative Procedure Law” (2002). Every year, several teachers would attend the academic meeting at home and abroad.

 Students

By setting up weekend forums, collecting academic papers, publishing students’ own academic publications and holding colorful league activities, we can enhance students’ cultural and academic stuff, body and mind’s stuff, moral stuff and culture tastes.

 Organizing students to join in the influencing competitions about law can offer students a stage to show themselves. In resent years, under the instructions of teachers such as Professor Zhangyong, Associate Professor He Zhuyu, Associate Professor Suiwei and Mr. Xie Hongbin, students got very good results in the “MaoZhong Cup” English debating competition and Jessup international court debating competition. In 2002, 1 student won the first prize, 1 student got the second, and 2 students got the third in the “ZhongFaTu bei” law books review competition held by Law Press and Chinese law books corporation. No matter the number of getting prize or the prize’s level we were the best; meanwhile we got the prize for excellent organization. Since 1996, lawyer Heyue established scholarship encouraging the students who stand out in subjects study, English learning, academic research and the fields of social work, sports, debate, etc.

 The basketball and volleyball team of the school of law won championship for many times in university. Every year, in sports meeting and chorus competitions, law school students have

the ability to get good results. All of these can reflect the good integrate stuff and spirit.

 In the students’ organizations of law school, apart from students union, there are Law activity union, Law aid group, new consciousness union, pioneer video union, all of which flourish students’ cultural life and cultivate students’ stuff, which have become the “second collectivity” creating a good environment and conditions for students.
